“The body is the unconscious mind.”

- Candace Pert

‘Soma’ originally comes from the Greek word for ‘body’. In current times, somatics is referred to as a therapy form which focuses on the conscious exploration and integration of the intricate body and mind connection. This is done through embodied awareness, movement and tapping into our feelings and emotions.

In our modern-day society, most people predominantly live from their mind. And it’s easy to see why. After all, it’s often one of the biggest drivers for things we have achieved in our lives whenever we used the mindset to learn, persevere and to reach new heights.

But what happens:

When there is structural stress in our lives?

When we get caught up in survival mode?

When there was a lack of emotional attunement
when we grew up as a child?

When overwhelming life events happen and our
emotions become too overwhelming, leaving
them addressed?

(Just to name a few things)

First, stress and contractions show up as whispers in the body. Over time, it builds up in our nervous system and its voice becomes louder and louder, till we breakdown or till we really start to listen to it.

The following symptoms may show up:

Being stuck in FIGHT/FLIGHT/FREEZE mode. We develop unnecessary and unhealthy coping mechanisms. We overthink. We become perfectionists. We try to escape or numb ourselves through distractions. Mentally and emotionally, we feel stuck. Anxious. Burnt out. Deflated. We get disconnected from ourselves and others or we never even got the sense of connection to begin with. We develop somatic health problems we can’t seem to get rid of. Energies get stuck in our bodies and don’t flow freely. We feel tense. On edge. We feel separated and it feels like we always need to be on guard for there is a perceived danger in every situation

The thing is: when there are deeply rooted patterns and stuck emotions, you can’t just "think your way out of it”.

Big or small overwhelming life events rewire our brains and our nervous system. Whenever we run into daily life situations or interactions, a sense of danger can get triggered (for the brain can’t make the distinction between a real or imagined danger). In turn, this sets off an automated, overreacted response inside of us that lead to unhealthy patterns and coping mechanisms.

“The path to recovery, healing and transformation is through a balanced approach of the body and the mind, for their connection is more deeply intertwined than our minds can ever fully comprehend.”

- Jamey Tang

That’s where Somatic Coaching & Healing steps in:

  • Somatic Coaching & Healing recognizes that true change doesn’t just happen in the mind—it happens in the body. Our habits, emotions, and even our sense of identity are deeply rooted in our physical experience. By tuning into your body’s wisdom, somatic coaching & healing helps you break free from old patterns, build resilience, and embrace lasting transformation.

  • Modern life often leaves us feeling disconnected, stressed, or burned out. Working on a somatic level provides tools to regulate your nervous system, build inner calm, and cultivate balance. By working with your body’s natural impulses, you’ll gain the skills to manage stress and thrive, even in challenging situations.

  • The body holds valuable insights about our subconscious minds, which are determinizing for our emotions, behaviors, and underlying beliefs.

Through somatic coaching, you’ll learn to listen to your body’s signals, uncover hidden patterns, and develop a clearer understanding of yourself. This awareness helps you align your actions with your values and purpose.

  • Somatic coaching isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Every session is tailored to your unique needs, combining conversation with somatic exercises such as movement, breathwork, and awareness exercises. This experiential approach allows you to embody change and practice new ways of being.

  • Somatic coaching blends self-awareness and embodied practices to help you grow and thrive in every area of life. Whether you’re navigating career transitions, improving relationships, or finding your true self, this approach empowers you to lead a life of intention, confidence, and meaningful connection.

How does a session look like?

Every Somatic Coaching & Healing session is different, as it is completely attuned to you, the themes that you bring into the session and the energy of the moment.

But, to give you an idea - a session typically can be divided into three parts:

  • We start the session with a short mindfulness moment, followed by a check-in on how you feel and what you want to bring into the session today. This can be directly related to your main theme, which is the focus of your healing journey, but it can also be a different theme (you might be surprised to see that it’s still very related to your main theme in the end!).

  • We will then do 1-2 practice(s) to tap into the wisdom of the body through practices of visualization, movement or physical touch. What the practice is, can differ every time. The focus of the practice(s) is on:

    • building safety from within

    • developing more body-awareness and self-awareness of the mind, as a doorway to..

    • exploring and resolving unhealthy patterns, limiting beliefs

    • healing unprocessed feelings, emotions and blockages, in a more experience-based way, by bringing the unconscious more into the conscious mind, without getting distracted by the mind’s rationalizations

    • bringing regulation into your nervous system

    • bringing release to what has been stuck as a mental or emotional blockage

  • After the practice, we take a moment to reflect back on what came up during the session, your main take-aways, how to integrate this into your daily life and other tips and tools so you can continue to take it forward on your healing journey.

What modalities are used?

Throughout my work in facilitating somatic healing journeys, workshops and events, one or more of the following modalities may be used.

  • Haptonomy is a profound method which uses a soft and supporting touch on the body. This will help you connect with your ‘felt sense’ as a way to tune into your feelings and emotions on a deeper level. It’s an effective method to create more body-awareness and to release mental or emotional blockages. You will lie down on the massage table and you can just keep your clothes on.

  • Have you ever noticed that when you are stuck in a loophole of thoughts, you mostly find yourself living either in the past or the future, ruminating about what happened or worrying about what’s to come? By consciously shifting the focus to our feet and breath, we can shift our attention back to the here and now. From whereon you have a fuller perspective on your challenges.

  • Our bodies store not only memories but also responses to experiences, many of which we are unaware of. Neuro-sensory exercises help in gently unlocking these stored responses through small, mindful movements that reawaken the body’s capacity to feel safe and connected. These practices help build resilience, regulating the nervous system and opening space for healing.

  • We tend to resist or repress so-called “negative” feelings, like overwhelm, anxiety or anger. Sometimes for years and decades even. Through a deeper understanding of how our nervous system works, we gradually learn to bring our mindful presence to these feelings where they can be felt and released.

  • Energetic healing focuses on balancing and restoring the body’s natural energy flow. Every experience, thought, and emotion influences our energetic field, and over time, disruptions in this flow can lead to feelings of stagnation, fatigue, or disconnection. Through gentle, non-invasive techniques, energetic healing helps clear blockages and enables the energy within the body to flow more freely. This often results in a sense of calmness, lightness and being centered.

  • Most of the time, our personal challenges are rooted not just within us but within the broader systems we are a part of, like family, culture, or community. Systemic work involves looking at these connections and patterns to uncover the hidden influences they may have on your current well-being. Through this exploration, we can gain clarity and understanding, allowing us to make more conscious choices about how we want to live. Systemic work can reveal powerful insights, helping you to find balance and harmony within yourself and within your relationships.
